Vitebsk human rights activists held a campaign against the death penalty

The action took place during the week against the death penalty, events which are held all over Belarus with 5 to 10 October. Human rights activists pasted on city stickers with the text "We are against the death penalty". In downtown passersby heard informational materials. These materials were also rasbrosany the mailboxes of several houses Vitebsk.

Among the information that is spread human rights activists, was the decision of the Human Rights Committee of the United Nations concerning the death penalty from the Vitebsk Vladislav Kovalev in 2012. Contacting HRC fed mother and sister of the convicted person. The Committee has repeatedly asked the Belarusian authorities not to implement the sentence, until the case is considered by the Committee, but these requests were ignored. According to the decision of the HRC, Belarus has violated against Vladislav Kovalev, a number of articles of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, including Article 6 - the right to life.

Recall, Belarus is the only country in Europe which still apply the death penalty. According to unofficial sources, since 1997 in the Republic of Belarus was executed more than 160 people.
